John Dokes Quintet
Vocalist John Dokes has stepped into the spotlight at the dawn of a revival of jazz putting a fresh spin on swinging jazz music with veteran bandleader George Gee, and long time collaborated renowned jazz trombonist David Gibson. He uses his smooth baritone voice to perform fresh takes on old and new standards. Singing a mixture of blues, ballads, popular songs, and jazz standards, his musical influences include Nat King Cole, Joe Williams, Mark Murphy, Jon Hendricks, Abbey Lincoln, Ahmad Jamal, Jimmy Rushing and Frank Sinatra.
John released his first project titled John Dokes Sings, George Gee Swings in 2010. This CD conducted and arranged by trombonist/composer David Gibson, paid tribute to Bird, Bacharat and Basie and featured some of the great Joe Williams classics including All Right, Ok, You Win and Roll em Pete. The CD also features a rendition of Ornithology with his favorite duet partner Hilary Garder with lyrics written by David Gibson. Their most recent duet of "Baby it's Cold Outside" provided the soundtrack on a commercial for Nautica. In addition to his developing solo efforts John continues to be featured as part of George Gee's stellar ensemble and can be heard on "Swing Makes You Happy". John's yet to be named second CD is scheduled for release this year. He continues to make strides in his storied marketing career that includes stints at Marvel Entertainment, MTV Networks-Viacom and AccuWeather.
The late, great and amazing Dawn Hampton, sister of Bop trombonist Slide Hampton also played a key role in bringing John's music to life. She was a legendary dancer former saxophonist and cabaret singer who has taught dance around the globe. Dokes, who met Hampton nearly twenty years ago, says it was she who encouraged him to get behind the mic and sing. These close friends were known for cutting a rug at many of Dokes’ shows.
